Ritual Bells, Global Gongs
This theatrical concert is a sung narration that reflects the historical relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia from different angles. In this way the polyphony of this history is made tangible. The performers take the stage in a quest for knowledge and understanding of this shared past. The story begins with the VOC in the early seventeenth century, and runs until Indonesia's detachment from the Netherlands in 1945 and the eventual transfer of sovereignty in 1949. How do the parties involved look back on this period? What is an appropriate way to commemorate these events and celebrate the new relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands?
