Indonesia - Netherlands

Sinta Wullur was born in Bandung, Indonesia (1958). here she grew up with the classical piano music of her mother, a pianist with a flourishing lesson practice. When she was ten she moved with her parents to the Netherlands.

Her musical training began at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where she studied piano with Willem Brons from 1976-1982.

At the conservatory, she encountered the Javanese gamelan of Elsje Plantema which was installed here.

Balinese gamelan

She continued her music studies with a study trip to Bali (1983). Here she learned to play various gamelan genres, which led to the founding of two gamelan groups: gong kebyar Tirta (1985) and gendèr wayang ensemble Irama (1987). Together with Henrice Vonck she organized many  projects with well-known Balinese artists.

From 1985 Sinta studied composition at the Sweelinck Conservatory (Amsterdam) with Ton de Leeuw. She continued her studies with Louis Andriessen and Theo Loevendie at the Royal Conservatory (The Hague). Since 1986 she has been composing for various ensembles and festivals at home and abroad.

Indian singing

In order to realize her wish to integrate the Indian raga and tala systems in her compositions, from 1989 to 1995 Sinta took lessons in Indian vocal music; dhrupad with Uday Bhawalkar and khayal with Koustouv Ray. 

In the period 2014 - 2016 she undertook study trips to Calcutta to further her Indian singing with Sanchita Chowdury.

Through her affinity with and specialization in linking eastern and western music cultures, Sinta is a popular speaker at conferences and seminars for composers worldwide. She has given presentations in the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Japan, New Zealand and Indonesia about the musical bridging of cultures.

Chromatic gamelan

To expand her possibilities in composition, Sinta took the initiative to build a chromatic gamelan, and together with composer and husband Jan Rokus van Roosendael, set up the Multifoon ensemble and foundation (1993). In the context of the Cultuur Nota (2000-2008), Multifoon organized a number of projects with both traditional and innovative gamelan music together with Raras Budaya foundation.

Female Composer of the Fatherland

In 2002 Sinta was elected as Female Composer of the Fatherland. In this context, she was invited to programme her own festival:Gamelan and Voice Expeditions. She was also given the opportunity to make a composition for astronaut André Kuipers. In 2004 he took the recording of this composition, Trip, into space.

Musical journeys 2013-2016

From 2013 to 2016, Sinta undertook a number of study trips to Indonesia and India in turn. Here she sought collaboration with local musicians and performed with them on several occasions; from concerts in Calcutta (India) to the international Sanur Festival (Bali) and the Sun Eclipse Festival (Sulawesi).

Since 2012, Sinta Wullur has undertaken musical expeditions in the world of Indian raga as an improvising and performing musician. In addition, she develops her own idiom in her  piano playing, based on gamelan rhythms. She also used Javanese vocal techniques in her singing. To perform this music that softens boundaries, she has founded various ensembles.

As a teacher and coach, Sinta has developed a unique style, through which she conveys her knowledge about the different perceptions of music in different cultures. Her versatile educative offer is housed in the Music Academy.
